Michelle and Sean’s Romantic Spring Wedding at Rancho Bernardo Inn
Michelle and Sean’s wedding was a beautiful mix of heartfelt moments, timeless elegance, and easygoing joy. These two first met while serving in the U.S. Navy. Their journey led them to a stunning spring celebration in May at the luxurious Rancho Bernardo Inn. With an outdoor wedding ceremony on the Valencia Lawn, a cocktail hour in the Santiago Courtyard, and a reception in the adjacent Santiago Ballroom, their day was full of meaningful details and timeless style. As a San Diego wedding photographer, I’ve worked at this venue many times, and, without a doubt, it’s always a favorite. I absolutely loved working with Michelle and Sean—both were so easygoing and kind throughout the whole process.

A Stunning Outdoor Wedding Ceremony at a Dream Venue
Rancho Bernardo Inn is one of the most versatile and scenic venues in San Diego, known for its lush gardens, Spanish-style architecture, and peaceful, resort-like ambiance. Michelle and Sean were drawn to its unique character and variety of backdrops, from garden pathways to elegant courtyards and grand indoor spaces. Many of their guests were traveling from out of town, so the couple appreciated how easy it was for everyone to stay onsite and enjoy the amenities.
The outdoor wedding ceremony took place on the Valencia Lawn, where a gentle breeze moved through the mature trees and the scent of fresh florals filled the air, creating a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. Their ceremony included a special knot-tying ritual symbolizing Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” It was a deeply meaningful touch.
After the ceremony, guests moved to the Santiago Courtyard for cocktails, while we slipped away for portraits. We captured photos on the Valencia Lawn, along the greenery-lined pathways, and the secluded garden path near the Bernardo Ballroom. Having photographed many weddings here, I know the best spots for dreamy light and romantic backdrops. Undoubtedly, two favorites are the ivy-covered archways near the spa, which create a storybook feel, and the golden light filtering through trees along the lower garden path—perfect for soft, romantic portraits. As always, the Rancho Bernardo Inn team kept everything running smoothly.

Elegant Style and Thoughtful Details
Michelle wore a classically elegant gown with delicate lace detailing, a medium-length train. Her jeweled hairpiece additionally added a touch of sparkle. Her bridesmaids wore burgundy dresses that perfectly tied into the floral palette. Sean wore a deep blue suit, a nod to their Navy roots. Michelle loved the subtle tribute, and guests commented on how sharp and meaningful his look felt. His burgundy necktie matched the bridesmaids and added a personal touch to the look. His groomsmen echoed the look, swapping the tie for stylish bowties.
The floral design was rich and romantic—featuring deep reds, burgundy, blush, and white roses in lush, organic arrangements that added texture and elegance to every space. Their ceremony arch featured an ornate floral centerpiece with flowing cream drapery. The reception tables featured matching floral arrangements and soft candlelight. Burgundy linens gave the space a warm, elegant glow.

As their Southern California wedding photographer, I was with them from getting ready in the Andalucia Suite through the end of the reception formalities. I helped them maximize their timeline so they could spend quality time with their loved ones—something that truly mattered to them.
Congratulations, Michelle and Sean! Your wedding day was beautiful, heartfelt, and such a joy to photograph. What stood out most to me was how intentional every part of your day felt—from the knot-tying ritual to the way you made time for your families. It was an honor to be part of it. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter together!
