Kim & Tyler’s Romantic Old Town Photoshoot at Golden Hour

Kim and Tyler’s old town photoshoot was warm, colorful, and full of charm. They’ve been together for eight years and engaged for five, taking their time to grow together, buy a home, and build a life they love. Both are elementary school teachers in San Marcos Unified. Tyler teaches 5th grade, Kim teaches 3rd, and they first met at San Marcos Elementary. Their connection grew while collaborating on a classroom project, and eventually, love bloomed. They even got engaged at Disneyland, the same place where they shared their first kiss. Disney continues to play a big part in their story.

I first connected with them through their wedding planner, Tara of Lu & Faye. Tara also was the planner for my own wedding, and we’ve collaborated on several beautiful celebrations since. When she told me she had found a couple I’d truly connect with, she was right. Kim and Tyler’s joyful energy, love of storytelling, and shared fondness for The Muppet Christmas Carol made our connection feel instant.

Why This Old Town Photoshoot Was So Meaningful

Kim and Tyler chose Old Town San Diego for their engagement session with a clear purpose. They’re getting married on November 1st, El Día de Los Muertos, and their wedding will embrace Kim’s Mexican heritage through bold, meaningful colors and traditions. Old Town’s vibrant architecture, historic buildings, and colorful shops were the perfect backdrop to echo their wedding theme. It’s also a place with personal roots: they often visit the Farmer’s Market here for relaxed shopping dates.

As a San Diego wedding photographer, I love how Old Town offers a dynamic mix of textured walls, rustic charm, and golden-hour magic. Every corner offers something new. Tiles, dramatic shadows, dreamy light flares, and intimate nooks create so many stunning photo opportunities.

Romantic Glow Meets Editorial Flair

For their old town photoshoot, I gave guidance on wardrobe and style that felt authentic to them and aligned with their location’s aesthetic. I also used a mix of natural golden-hour light and off-camera flash to create variety. Some photos leaned into a romantic editorial vibe, while others captured their playful, easygoing chemistry. Prompts and gentle direction, like walking hand-in-hand past their favorite shops or whispering their favorite Disneyland memories, helped them relax, laugh, and just be themselves. The result? A gallery full of connection, warmth, and personality.

I’m so honored to be documenting this next chapter of Kim and Tyler’s journey. From their thoughtful location choice to the joy they bring to every moment, this session was a perfect preview of their beautiful November wedding to come, and I can’t wait to capture it.
