Jessica & Drew | Romantic September Beach Photoshoot | La Jolla

A September Beach Photoshoot at Sunset

Jessica and Drew’s September beach photoshoot at the La Jolla tide pools felt personal from the very beginning. They met through a mutual friend who encouraged Drew to message Jessica. Their shared values, faith, focus on family, entrepreneurial passions, and love of amazing Vietnamese food made it an easy yes. The proposal was just as meaningful. After a Saturday morning walk with Jessica’s dad on the beach, Drew asked for her parents’ blessing over lunch. He picked up the ring, came home, and when Jessica connected the dots, he dropped to one knee in their living room. It was private, intentional, and exactly what she wanted. They later celebrated with family that evening. I first connected with them on Instagram, and from there, everything unfolded naturally.

La Jolla Tide Pools Beach Photoshoot

They chose the La Jolla Tide Pools for a reason. The location offers that classic La Jolla look. It is also close to their church, Mary, Star of the Sea, where they will celebrate their San Diego wedding. That connection made the setting even more meaningful.

As a wedding photographer in San Diego, I never take coastal access for granted. Beach locations are one of the great perks of living here. However, the tide pools offer something different. The textured rocks, layered cliffs, and reflective water create depth you cannot find on every stretch of sand. The setting feels distinctly Southern California.

Throughout the beach photoshoot, I focused on helping them feel at ease. We talked beforehand about what they love and what they do not. That conversation matters. I gave them simple prompts instead of rigid poses. They laughed easily. They settled into each other without overthinking it. The result felt natural and honest.

As the sun lowered, I blended soft natural light with off-camera flash. This gave them a range of imagery. Some frames feel cinematic and bold. Others are relaxed and candid. Together, they reflect both their romance and their playful energy. That balance is something I always aim for in my wedding photography.

A Thoughtful Start to Wedding Planning

Engagement sessions are more than pretty photos. They build trust. They create rhythm before the wedding day. For couples planning a San Diego wedding or even a destination wedding in Southern California, that comfort makes a difference.

Jessica and Drew left with images that feel like them. More importantly, they left with a confidence and steadiness that will carry into their wedding day at Mary, Star of the Sea. I am honored to document this season for them.
