Same Sex Engagement Photos at Balboa Park

Some engagement sessions feel good from the very beginning. Tumelo and Rashaad were one of those couples. They found me through Instagram, and from our first conversation, it was clear they knew exactly who they were and what they wanted. Like many modern couples, their story starts on Tinder. They matched, unmatched, and then matched again months later. Their first date was at Spark Social in San Francisco, though Rashaad made Tumelo wait two hours because his phone had died and he was mid-haircut. Eventually, Rashaad made up for it in a big way. He organized a Sip-and-Paint event at Cielo Rooftop and proposed right at sunset. When it came time to document their engagement, they wanted same sex engagement photos that were joyful, cinematic, and full of personality. Balboa Park in October was the perfect place to make that happen.

Why Balboa Park Works for Same Sex Engagement Photos

Tumelo and Rashaad chose Balboa Park for its iconic status and its architecture. They had a clear editorial vision, and they knew that their bold fashion needed a location that could hold its own. The park delivered on all of it. As a San Diego wedding photographer, Balboa Park is one of my favorite places to photograph. It’s iconic for a reason, but what I love most is taking couples to the corners and quiet spots that most people walk right past. There’s always something new to find, and a couple with strong visual instincts, like these two, makes the exploration even better.

The Session: Style, Swag, and a Whole Lot of Fun

Before we ever picked up a camera, I took time to get to know Tumelo and Rashaad. Their photography likes and dislikes, what felt exciting, what felt forced. That preparation matters. Going into a session with that context means the photos reflect who the couple actually is, not just what they look like standing next to each other. Tumelo and Rashaad brought multiple outfits and leaned fully into the fashion energy they’re known for. There was style and intention behind every look, and the architecture of Balboa Park gave each one a strong backdrop to land against.

Throughout the session, I gave them prompts designed to keep them comfortable and relaxed. Natural personality comes out when people aren’t overthinking it, and these two had plenty of it to work with. I also mixed natural light with off-camera flash to give them variety. Some images are warm and cinematic. Others are candid and full of movement. Together, they tell a fuller story of who Tumelo and Rashaad are as a couple.

They wanted their same sex engagement photos to feel joyful and cinematic, and we absolutely got there. Whether you’re planning a San Diego wedding or looking for a Southern California wedding photographer for a destination wedding elsewhere, the approach is the same: good preparation, genuine connection, and a willingness to have fun with it.

A Session Worth Remembering

Tumelo and Rashaad are planning two wedding celebrations: One in Botswana and one in New Orleans. Their engagement session was a real preview of what their wedding energy is going to look like. Vibrant, personal, and a little larger than life. For couples looking for same sex engagement photos that actually feel like them, that’s exactly the goal.
