Heather & Francisco’s La Jolla Coastal Wedding at the Martin Johnson House
Some love stories begin with a simple hello. Heather and Francisco’s story started in a lab. Both were chemists working in cancer research at a biotech company in La Jolla. At first, they barely knew each other. Then Francisco invited Heather on a friends’ trip to Spain. Somewhere between shared adventures and long conversations, they fell in love. A year later, he proposed on their anniversary. When it came time to plan their coastal wedding, they chose the Martin Johnson House on UCSD’s campus in La Jolla. I first met them at a wedding expo, and I was honored when they asked me to photograph their day. My team and I documented everything from getting ready through the reception, and it was a joy working with them. They trusted my guidance while strategizing their timeline, which gave their day space to breathe and allowed every meaningful moment to unfold naturally.

A Coastal Wedding Ceremony Overlooking Scripps Pier
The Martin Johnson House is one of the most intimate venues for a coastal wedding in La Jolla. Perched above the ocean, it offers sweeping views toward Scripps Pier and the Pacific horizon. The ceremony took place beneath a dramatic coastal cypress tree that perfectly framed the ocean.
The couple told me, “We initially looked at some larger venues that were also beautiful. But when we looked at the Martin Johnson House, it just felt like the perfect size for us, not too big and not too small. We could totally see all of our friends and family there.” They added, “Our favorite feature is the tree above where the ceremony will take place. It perfectly frames the ocean view.”
To honor Francisco’s family, the ceremony was held in both English and Spanish. It was heartfelt and personal. When I asked what they were most excited about, they shared, “We are just super excited to actually get married. The ceremony is over so quickly, but it is super important to us.”

Elegant Coastal Wedding Style and Garden-Inspired Details
Heather’s gown was timeless and graceful. The strapless sweetheart neckline and sculpted bodice created a clean, elegant silhouette. Meanwhile, the flowing A-line skirt and cathedral-length train added movement and drama in portraits by the ocean.
Francisco wore a deep navy suit with a floral tie and brown leather shoes. The groomsmen wore dark suits with emerald green ties, while the bridesmaids wore champagne satin dresses. Together, the palette felt natural and cohesive against the ocean and greenery.
Their décor leaned into the venue’s garden-like setting. Long wooden farmhouse tables featured emerald napkins, colorful vintage goblets, and small wildflower arrangements. Guests also discovered playful personal touches. Each place setting included photos of the bride and groom from earlier in life.
Heather shared that they chose wildflower décor because they love parks and being outside. The garden style felt like a natural extension of the venue.
Instead of a traditional cake, they served Italian gelato. They also embraced Francisco’s culture through a taco dinner and margaritas. “We love tacos,” they told me, laughing.

A Joyful Celebration by the Ocean
We captured portraits around the ceremony site and on UCSD’s balconies overlooking the water. Throughout the day, Heather and Francisco radiated joy. Their goal was simple. As they told me beforehand, “We just want our guests to see how happy we are together.” That happiness carried into the dance floor and every moment in between.
Heather and Francisco, congratulations again. Thank you for trusting me to photograph your beautiful coastal wedding at the Martin Johnson House. I wish you both a lifetime filled with love, adventure, and many more joyful celebrations.
