A landmark of European-inspired luxury in the heart of downtown San Diego, The Westgate Hotel is one of the city's most visually commanding wedding venues. Built around an authentic collection of 18th-century antiques, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, and Versailles-inspired interiors, it offers couples a rare combination: a truly self-decorating space with urban accessibility, flexible indoor and outdoor event venues, and a hospitality team that consistently earns some of the highest marks in the San Diego market.

The Westgate Hotel opened in September 1970, developed by prominent San Diego banker and civic figure C. Arnholt Smith. His vision was straightforward: build a world-class luxury property worthy of U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, and international royalty in a city that, at the time, lacked a hotel at that level. At its debut, national media called it the most luxurious and expensive hotel ever constructed in the United States.
The design drew directly from the grand French palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau. The lower lobby was built as a faithful recreation of a Versailles anteroom, filled with original paintings by François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Thomas Gainsborough, alongside a rosewood bombé commode signed by renowned French artisan François Linke and custom Baccarat crystal chandeliers manufactured in Milan specifically for the hotel. In 1976, the property was purchased by Robert Earl Holding and his wife, owners of Sinclair Oil Corporation and Grand Hotels and Resorts. Following significant renovations in 1997 and 2018, the hotel continues to operate as one of San Diego's most distinctive independent luxury properties.

What separates The Westgate from a standard San Diego ballroom venue is the density of its design. The antique-filled interiors do a significant amount of the aesthetic heavy lifting before a single flower arrangement is placed, which has real implications for couples managing a wedding budget. A few standout features worth knowing:

The Westgate's interiors are so richly detailed that supplementary draping, rental furniture, and elaborate floral installations are largely optional. Gold-leaf accents, European oil paintings, custom crystal chandeliers, and historic woodwork establish a visual baseline that most venues require thousands of dollars in decor to approximate. Couples working with a refined but finite budget often find this one of the venue's most practical advantages.
The Westgate is built for more than a single-day event. The property includes the 40,000-square-foot AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club with three private studios, a full-service luxury spa, a rooftop running track, and a heated pool. These spaces allow wedding parties to plan pre-wedding spa days, morning workouts, and wellness sessions without leaving the hotel. The on-site Bonne Vie Brasserie & Bar, led by Executive Chef Fabrice Hardel, and a traditional Afternoon Tea service provide ready-made settings for rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, welcome cocktails, and farewell brunches.
The Westgate sits on the edge of the historic Gaslamp Quarter, minutes from San Diego International Airport and steps from the San Diego Trolley station. For couples with a large out-of-town guest list, the location is a logistical asset. Petco Park is nearby, giving guests easy access to San Diego's downtown core during a multi-day wedding weekend.
The Westgate offers 14 dedicated event spaces totaling over 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor options. That variety allows couples to move fluidly between a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception without leaving the property.

Gold-gilt reflective chairs amplify the room's ambient light, making the space particularly striking for evening photography.

The Westgate uses a consistent, non-seasonal pricing structure, meaning package costs do not fluctuate by day of the week. There is one exception: ceremony site fees are slightly reduced during the off-peak season (January through March).
The Westgate offers a layered visual environment that blends classical European architecture with dramatic urban views. For a wedding photographer, the variety of usable locations within a single property is one of the venue's biggest assets.

The sweeping grand staircase is a natural anchor for formal portraits and wedding party photos, particularly effective during cocktail hour when the Baccarat crystal chandeliers are illuminated and casting warm, ambient light.
The second-floor corridors feature gold-gilt framed mirrors and detailed ceiling work. These reflective surfaces allow photographers to construct layered, multi-dimensional portraits with a depth that's difficult to replicate in standard ballroom environments.
The ballroom's gilt detailing, gold reflective chairs, and crystal chandeliers create a rich, warm backdrop for reception coverage. Adding warm uplighting can amplify the depth of the historic plaster moldings during evening dancing.
The terrace offers downtown San Diego skyline views framed by European-style garden greenery. It is one of the strongest outdoor portrait locations available at any downtown San Diego venue.
The Westgate holds a 4.7 to 4.9 out of 5-star rating and a 97% recommendation rate across wedding planning platforms. Couples and professional planners consistently call out the events team for meticulous attention to detail, proactive communication, and genuine flexibility, including seamless coordination of complex cultural ceremonies and stress-free rescheduling during pandemic-era disruptions. The culinary program under Executive Chef Fabrice Hardel earns strong marks for generously portioned, high-quality plated meals and hors d'oeuvres. A small number of reviews note occasional communication delays during the initial booking phase, but the overall consensus is clear: The Westgate delivers a polished, memorable, and well-managed wedding weekend experience.
