The Santa Ynez Valley sits about thirty-five minutes north of Santa Barbara, and Sunstone Villa and Vineyards is the reason many couples make the drive. Built entirely from reclaimed European materials and set within 52 acres of organically farmed vineyard, the estate is one of the most architecturally authentic wedding venues in California. The combination of French limestone walls, 19th-century hand-hewn timber, and a working winery creates a setting that feels genuinely transported from the south of France, without the flight.

Sunstone's origin story begins with a wrong turn. In 1988, the Rice family was searching for property near Santa Barbara when they wandered off course and discovered a south-sloping hillside overlooking the Santa Ynez River. They never found the original property. They didn't need to.
Planting began in 1990 across 28 acres of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, and Sunstone became the oldest continuously organically farmed vineyard in Santa Barbara County. The winery opened in 1994. Then, after a family trip to France uncovered the remains of demolished chateaus, a five-year search for reclaimed stone, timber, and artifacts began. The 8,500-square-foot Sunstone Villa was completed in 2004, built entirely from salvaged European materials, and has been hosting weddings ever since.
Sourced from chateaus in Aix-en-Provence, Normandy, and the Loire Valley, the stone carries centuries of character that no new construction can replicate.
The interior timber was reclaimed from a Victorian-era lavender factory in Avignon that had been destroyed by fire. Guests frequently notice a faint, lingering fragrance from the wood.
The villa's fireplaces anchor the interior year-round, making Sunstone as atmospheric in winter as it is in the height of summer.
A prison cell door from Napoleonic-era Normandy, a fireplace sourced from the Bordeaux region, and reclaimed 19th-century doors throughout the five primary suites give the villa a museum-quality depth.
The villa's gated grounds and separation from the public winery ensure that wedding events remain entirely secluded.
The 52-acre estate, farmed organically since planting, keeps the surrounding landscape immaculate throughout the seasons.
Five master suites in the villa house up to 10 overnight guests, outfitted with Mascioni Italian linens and L'Occitane bath products. A guest cottage (available 2025) adds three additional suites and accommodates up to 10 more guests.
Sunstone is designed for couples who want more than a single evening. The weekend buyout structure supports welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, receptions, and farewell brunches, all on one extraordinary property.
Sunstone offers a layered collection of ceremony and reception environments. Whether couples envision an intimate courtyard dinner or a sweeping estate celebration for hundreds, the property provides a setting to match.
The Vineyards: The 52 acres of organic vine rows, especially during the harvest months, offer a layered and luminous backdrop for couple portraits. The interplay between the vine canopy, the mountain silhouette, and the fading afternoon sun produces images that feel cinematic and entirely specific to this place.
The Villa Archways and Limestone Entryways: The stone archways along the Villa's façade function like natural frames. First looks, bridal portraits, and editorial fashion-style shots all land beautifully here. The texture of the reclaimed limestone holds light in a way that photographs beautifully.
The West Oak Trees: The intertwined oak canopy at the ceremony site creates a layered, organic environment that appears timeless in photographs. The dappled light filtering through the combined canopy during morning and midday portraits is a particular strength of this location.
The Ancient Olive Trees: Scattered throughout the courtyard and along Vineyard Row, the silver-leafed olive trees provide soft, neutral texture that complements virtually every floral palette and wedding color.
Interior Spaces: The villa's interior offers editorial-quality backdrops that most outdoor venues cannot match. The 19th-century reclaimed doors, limestone fireplaces, French antiques, and sun-washed stone walls are particularly well suited for getting-ready coverage and intimate bridal portraits.

Couples who celebrate at Sunstone consistently describe it as a place that makes them feel they have been transported to the south of France without ever leaving California. Reviewers highlight the "majestic serenity" of the property and the architectural authenticity of the villa, with many noting that they did not expect a venue in the United States to feel so genuinely European. The quality of the golden hour light and the overall beauty of the estate are among the most frequently cited reasons couples choose Sunstone for their wedding day. Those who host multi-day celebrations speak especially warmly about the residential quality of the experience, describing the weekend as an immersive retreat rather than a single event. While planners note that the dry-hire model requires thoughtful vendor coordination and significant logistical planning, the resounding consensus is that the privacy, architectural grandeur, and layered beauty of the estate make it a singular choice for couples who want a wedding that genuinely cannot be replicated anywhere else.
