Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

The Santa Ynez Valley sits about thirty-five minutes north of Santa Barbara, and Sunstone Villa and Vineyards is the reason many couples make the drive. Built entirely from reclaimed European materials and set within 52 acres of organically farmed vineyard, the estate is one of the most architecturally authentic wedding venues in California. The combination of French limestone walls, 19th-century hand-hewn timber, and a working winery creates a setting that feels genuinely transported from the south of France, without the flight.

A Santa Barbara Wine Country Wedding Venue Like No Other

A Brief History of Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

Sunstone's origin story begins with a wrong turn. In 1988, the Rice family was searching for property near Santa Barbara when they wandered off course and discovered a south-sloping hillside overlooking the Santa Ynez River. They never found the original property. They didn't need to.

Planting began in 1990 across 28 acres of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, and Sunstone became the oldest continuously organically farmed vineyard in Santa Barbara County. The winery opened in 1994. Then, after a family trip to France uncovered the remains of demolished chateaus, a five-year search for reclaimed stone, timber, and artifacts began. The 8,500-square-foot Sunstone Villa was completed in 2004, built entirely from salvaged European materials, and has been hosting weddings ever since.

Noteworthy Features of Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

What separates Sunstone from other luxury wedding venues in California is not a curated aesthetic applied to a modern building. It is the building itself. Every material, every surface, every doorway carries genuine provenance.

Reclaimed Limestone Walls

Sourced from chateaus in Aix-en-Provence, Normandy, and the Loire Valley, the stone carries centuries of character that no new construction can replicate.

19th-Century Hand-Hewn Beams

The interior timber was reclaimed from a Victorian-era lavender factory in Avignon that had been destroyed by fire. Guests frequently notice a faint, lingering fragrance from the wood.

Eight Limestone Fireplaces

The villa's fireplaces anchor the interior year-round, making Sunstone as atmospheric in winter as it is in the height of summer.

Authentic European Artifacts

A prison cell door from Napoleonic-era Normandy, a fireplace sourced from the Bordeaux region, and reclaimed 19th-century doors throughout the five primary suites give the villa a museum-quality depth.

Complete Privacy

The villa's gated grounds and separation from the public winery ensure that wedding events remain entirely secluded.

Organic Vineyard Setting

The 52-acre estate, farmed organically since planting, keeps the surrounding landscape immaculate throughout the seasons.

Luxury Overnight Accommodations

Five master suites in the villa house up to 10 overnight guests, outfitted with Mascioni Italian linens and L'Occitane bath products. A guest cottage (available 2025) adds three additional suites and accommodates up to 10 more guests.

Multi-Day Celebration Model

Sunstone is designed for couples who want more than a single evening. The weekend buyout structure supports welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, receptions, and farewell brunches, all on one extraordinary property.

Ceremony & Reception Sites Offered by This Santa Barbara Wedding Venue

Sunstone offers a layered collection of ceremony and reception environments. Whether couples envision an intimate courtyard dinner or a sweeping estate celebration for hundreds, the property provides a setting to match.

The stone courtyard at the heart of the villa is one of the most intimate spaces on the property. Framed by the limestone façade on all sides, it centers around a large French outdoor fireplace that serves as a natural gathering point for evening ceremonies and candlelit dinners. Seated capacity ranges from 80 to 150 guests, with standing capacity up to 200.

The Villa Courtyard

The estate's primary celebration space. This expansive manicured lawn offers panoramic views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the rolling vineyard hills, with the Villa providing a dramatic architectural backdrop for dinner and dancing. It is the largest outdoor space on the villa grounds and can accommodate up to 350 seated guests.

The Villa Lawn (Reception Lawn)

Villa Grounds

Located in the heart of the organic vineyard, the West Oak site is defined by two ancient oak trees whose canopies have grown into one another over time, forming a natural archway over the ceremony space. It seats up to 350 guests and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. For couples drawn to an organic, undecorated ceremony backdrop, this is among the most beautiful sites anywhere in California wine country.

West Oak Ceremony Site

A smaller, aromatic garden near the villa well suited for intimate ceremonies, elopements, or quiet moments between events. Its sensory richness — fragrance, texture, color — makes it a memorable setting in every season.

Vineyard Sites

Winery & Subterranean Spaces

The vine-lined corridor between the estate's rows of organic grapes is used for grand entrances, cocktail transitions, and intimate al fresco dinners. The organic vines, especially during harvest season, create a layered and textured environment that photographs beautifully.

Vineyard Row

The winery-level courtyards, planted with rosemary and lavender, are well suited for welcome parties and cocktail hours. The Lavender Court holds up to 70 seated or 120 standing guests. The Fountain Courtyard accommodates up to 80 seated or 150 standing.

Lavender + Fountain Courtyards (Winery)

These subterranean wine caves offer stone walls, candlelight, and a temperature-controlled atmosphere that is unlike anything available at a conventional venue. The Cuvee Cave accommodates up to 60 seated or 100 standing guests. La Cav is more intimate, with capacity for 40 seated or 80 standing. Both are ideal for rehearsal dinners or atmospheric private events.

Perched above the wine caves, this terrace offers elevated views and sunset exposure, making it a natural fit for cocktail hours and transitional gatherings. Capacity: 90 seated or 170 standing.

Cavetop Terrace

The lower lawn near the winery building serves as a versatile space for large welcome parties or outdoor picnic-style gatherings. Capacity ranges from 200 to 300 seated and 200 to 500 standing, though events of this scale may require a special events permit from Santa Barbara County.

Price for Hosting a Southern California Wedding at Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

Sunstone Villa operates at the top of the luxury wedding market in Southern California. The venue uses a multi-day buyout structure, meaning couples and their guests have exclusive access to the entire property for the duration of the event.

Weekend Rental (Friday through Sunday): Starting between $50,000 and $75,425. This includes use of all ceremony and reception sites on the villa grounds and overnight accommodations for 10 guests in the five master suites.

Three-Day Package: Full three-day packages typically range from $70,000 to $91,587, depending on the date and specific requirements.

Elopement and Intimate Packages: For celebrations of 25 guests or fewer, ceremony-only elopement packages start at $5,000. More comprehensive intimate wedding options for up to 50 guests typically result in a venue-related investment of $25,000 or more.

Important Planning Notes:

  • A 10% room tax is applied to the lodging portion of the rental fee.
  • Valet service is a mandatory expense for events with a significant guest count.
  • Sunstone operates on a "dry hire" model. The venue provides the estate itself; all catering, furniture, linens, and event infrastructure must be sourced from external vendors. Catering teams must be fully self-sufficient, typically operating from mobile kitchen tents.

Overall Budget Expectations: Because no tables, chairs, linens, or catering are included, total event budgets run significantly higher than the site fee alone.

Wedding Photo Opportunities at
Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

Photographers describe Sunstone as one of the most naturally photogenic properties in the United States. The combination of reclaimed European stone, 52 acres of organic vineyard, and the Santa Ynez Valley's distinctive golden light creates conditions that are genuinely difficult to find anywhere else in California.

Signature Photo Locations on the Property

The Vineyards: The 52 acres of organic vine rows, especially during the harvest months, offer a layered and luminous backdrop for couple portraits. The interplay between the vine canopy, the mountain silhouette, and the fading afternoon sun produces images that feel cinematic and entirely specific to this place.

The Villa Archways and Limestone Entryways: The stone archways along the Villa's façade function like natural frames. First looks, bridal portraits, and editorial fashion-style shots all land beautifully here. The texture of the reclaimed limestone holds light in a way that photographs beautifully.

The West Oak Trees: The intertwined oak canopy at the ceremony site creates a layered, organic environment that appears timeless in photographs. The dappled light filtering through the combined canopy during morning and midday portraits is a particular strength of this location.

The Ancient Olive Trees: Scattered throughout the courtyard and along Vineyard Row, the silver-leafed olive trees provide soft, neutral texture that complements virtually every floral palette and wedding color.

Interior Spaces: The villa's interior offers editorial-quality backdrops that most outdoor venues cannot match. The 19th-century reclaimed doors, limestone fireplaces, French antiques, and sun-washed stone walls are particularly well suited for getting-ready coverage and intimate bridal portraits.

What Couples Say About Hosting Their Wedding at Sunstone Villa and Vineyards

Couples who celebrate at Sunstone consistently describe it as a place that makes them feel they have been transported to the south of France without ever leaving California. Reviewers highlight the "majestic serenity" of the property and the architectural authenticity of the villa, with many noting that they did not expect a venue in the United States to feel so genuinely European. The quality of the golden hour light and the overall beauty of the estate are among the most frequently cited reasons couples choose Sunstone for their wedding day. Those who host multi-day celebrations speak especially warmly about the residential quality of the experience, describing the weekend as an immersive retreat rather than a single event. While planners note that the dry-hire model requires thoughtful vendor coordination and significant logistical planning, the resounding consensus is that the privacy, architectural grandeur, and layered beauty of the estate make it a singular choice for couples who want a wedding that genuinely cannot be replicated anywhere else.
