The site's modern history begins in 1924, when civic leader John D. Spreckels subdivided the Mission Beach peninsula and extended a streetcar line to the area. Development stalled for decades after winter storms destroyed the connecting bridges, but the City of San Diego acquired the underlying 15.5-acre property in 1945 and launched a massive dredging operation that transformed over 4,500 acres of mudflats into the master-planned aquatic park known today as Mission Bay.
The resort itself opened in 1962, when developer Del Webb commissioned Las Vegas architect Martin Stern, Jr. to design a whimsical property built around the concept of an English ship moored in Tahiti. The nautical-themed resort became a San Diego landmark and even appeared in the 1967 Jerry Lewis comedy The Big Mouth.
