A Brief  History of Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa



 

Rancho Valencia opened in 1989, designed from the ground up by renowned AIA-member architect James Morton Sr. His philosophy was rooted in residential comfort and a deep sense of solitude, which is still palpable in every corner of the property today. The design drew heavily from Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean influences: hand-crafted tiles, terracotta roof lines, adobe fireplaces, and a natural landscape anchored by mature Valencia orange trees.

The resort has never stopped evolving. A $30 million renovation completed in 2012 modernized the guest suites, main clubhouse, spa facilities, and the acclaimed Veladora Restaurant. Additional capital improvements followed in 2020, 2021, and 2024, including a full structural renovation of the Forbes Five-Star rated spa. Throughout every phase of growth, the resort has maintained its standing as a Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond property, a distinction held by very few venues in the country.

The Citrus Room

An intimate private dining room with warm lighting, best for small family gatherings or pre-wedding meals.

The Croquet Lawn

The resort's most expansive outdoor venue, the Croquet Lawn is a manicured grass space framed by beds of hibiscus and bougainvillea, shaded by towering palms and mature California live oaks. The lawn is fully flexible: couples can host an open-air celebration under the stars or erect a large-scale custom tent buildout. Views look out over the rolling hills and valleys of Rancho Santa Fe.

The Valencia Lawn

A sprawling garden lawn bordered by Mediterranean casitas and vibrant coral trees, the Valencia Lawn is a slightly more intimate counterpart to the Croquet Lawn. Note: to manage noise and preserve guest privacy during late-night events, the resort requires the hosting party to book the six surrounding casitas.

The Sunrise Patio

The Terrace room & Patio

The Hacienda

The Rose Garden

Rancho Valencia is a five-star property and is priced accordingly. The baseline starting package cost for a wedding at the resort is $25,860. Most couples spend between $50,000 and $150,000, depending on the guest count and any custom additions. All events are subject to a $20,000 minimum food and beverage spend.

Wedding Packages

The resort offers three tiered wedding packages. All packages require a minimum of 50 guests and include a luxury suite for the couple on the wedding night, professional valet parking, tableside cake cutting, and full ceremony setup with birchwood folding chairs, microphones, sound systems, and citrus water stations. All pricing is subject to a 22% service charge and applicable sales tax.
