Perched on a hillside between two canyons in the Heritage Valley, Newhall Mansion is one of Southern California's most extraordinary wedding venues. Set on nine private acres in the small town of Piru, roughly 30 miles north of Los Angeles, this Queen Anne Victorian estate offers engaged couples something genuinely rare: a full weekend immersive experience in a setting that feels more like the European countryside than the outskirts of the Los Angeles basin. With its grand architecture, sweeping mountain views, and all-inclusive weekend packages, Newhall Mansion is a destination wedding venue that delivers the grandeur of a faraway escape without the travel.

Newhall Mansion traces its origins to 1887, when David Caleb Cook, a prominent religious literature publisher from Illinois, purchased over 13,000 acres of the historic Rancho Temescal in the upper Santa Clara Valley. Cook's vision for the land was ambitious: a "Second Garden of Eden" planted with biblical species including figs, olives, dates, and pomegranates. The mansion itself was constructed between 1889 and 1893, designed by acclaimed California architects Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom, whose work defined the Queen Anne Victorian style across the state.
After passing through several owners, the property was acquired in 1968 by Scott and Ruth Newhall, whose commitment to preservation would define the estate's modern story. That commitment was tested in 1981, when a spark from a painter's blowtorch during a restoration project burned the wood-framed structure to its foundation in a matter of hours. Rather than accept the loss, the Newhalls rebuilt the 12,000-square-foot mansion by 1983, using original blueprints and historic photographs to restore it to its 1890s specifications. The reconstruction is so faithful that the property is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. In 2012, the estate was converted into the wedding and event venue it is today.

A sweeping centerpiece of the interior, ideal for bridal entrances, first-look reveals, and formal portraits.
Originally the formal dining room, this space features gold plaster-cast ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and arched mirrored windows. It also houses a piece of Prohibition-era history: secret liquor compartments and ceiling panels that were once used for photographing visiting dignitaries.
Spanning 3,000 square feet on the top floor, the suite features a large bay window that fills the space with natural light. Brides often describe the experience of watching guests arrive from the tower window as feeling like "a princess in a tower."
A brick-walled, Gothic-inspired space beneath the mansion, complete with a custom redwood bar, pool table, and lounge area. It functions as a natural gathering spot for the groomsmen in the morning and as a late-night after-party venue when the evening winds down.
The mansion sleeps up to 20 guests across 8 uniquely styled rooms, each with its own gas fireplace. This capacity makes the full weekend experience genuinely residential, allowing the wedding party to live in the venue together from Friday to Sunday.

The Grand Staircase is one of the most requested spots on the property for good reason. Its sweep and scale give bridal portraits a cinematic quality that is difficult to replicate anywhere else. The stained-glass elements throughout the mansion cast layered, colorful light across interior spaces at different points in the day, creating opportunities that shift with the light. The Library and Underground Tavern offer contrasting moods, one warm and academic, the other moody and atmospheric, giving photographers strong options for groom and groomsmen coverage.
The front lawn's ornamental fountain and mountain backdrop anchor the most classic portraits of the day. The citrus and olive groves that trace back to David Cook's original vision provide a quintessentially Californian setting, particularly during golden hour when the light filters through the canopy. The mansion's verandas and intricate scrollwork create natural frames for the couple, and the property's hillside position between two canyons opens up sweeping panoramic views of the Santa Clara Valley at sunset. There is also a dedicated "Alice in Wonderland Table" on the grounds, available for whimsical styled portraits following the ceremony.

Newhall Mansion consistently holds ratings of 4.9 to 5.0 stars across major wedding review platforms, and the sentiment running through the reviews is remarkably consistent. Couples describe the venue as a "fairytale" setting that offers something genuinely distinct from the typical Southern California wedding venue experience. General Manager Crystal receives frequent and specific praise for her responsiveness and attentiveness throughout the planning process, and Head Chef Giancarlo earns high marks for his ability to craft and customize menus, including elaborate vegan requests, in ways couples describe as "culinary masterpieces." Beyond the individual staff members, reviewers consistently point to the weekend experience itself as transformative. The intimacy of shared breakfasts with the wedding party, late-night gatherings in the Underground Tavern, and the feeling of having the entire estate to themselves for a full weekend are recurring themes. With approximately 99 percent of couples recommending the venue, Newhall Mansion earns its reputation not just through its visual grandeur but through a level of service and hospitality that couples describe as making the entire celebration feel genuinely personal.
