La Valencia opened in 1926 as Los Apartmentos de Sevilla, designed by architect Reginald D. Johnson in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Two years later, the property was renamed La Valencia Hotel and expanded with an eight story tower and the gold domed cupola that still anchors the skyline today. That expansion is also where the hotel picked up its rose colored exterior, and its nickname stuck for good reason.
Over the following decades, La Valencia became a favorite retreat for Hollywood's golden age, hosting guests like Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire during the early years of the nearby La Jolla Playhouse.
