Kristina + Kyle | Elegant Cherry Blossom Engagement Photos in Spring | Balboa Park

A Love Story Years in the Making

Some love stories are built over time, and Kristina and Kyle’s is one of them. They’ve known each other since they were 12, meeting in junior high and becoming tight-knit in high school. Their paths took them in different directions for college, but when Kristina moved back home, their friendship rekindled into something more. Now, nearly five years later, they’re planning their wedding. They love hiking, adventuring, and making each other laugh, so when they won an engagement session with me at a wedding expo, they knew they wanted something that reflected their connection with nature.

They chose the Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park—a perfect setting for a romantic, serene, and lush engagement session. Even better, they made a weekend out of it, celebrating their dating anniversary in San Diego while capturing this special milestone. I was thrilled to return to one of my favorite photography locations, where we had the entire garden to ourselves before it opened to the public. And with spring in full bloom, their cherry blossom engagement photos couldn’t have been more magical.

A Dreamy Spring Session at the Japanese Friendship Garden

Kristina and Kyle live in Los Angeles but wanted their engagement session to reflect the nature-inspired theme they’re planning for their wedding. The Japanese Friendship Garden was a perfect fit. Nestled in the heart of Balboa Park, it offers tranquil koi ponds, winding stone pathways, and, in spring, vibrant cherry blossoms in full bloom. The peaceful atmosphere and lush greenery created an idyllic setting for capturing both the romantic and fun sides of their relationship.

As a San Diego wedding photographer, I love shooting at this venue for more than just its beauty. The garden’s exclusive photography policy allows us private access before it opens to the public, meaning we can fully immerse ourselves in each moment—no crowds, no distractions, just pure magic.

Cherry Blossom Engagement Photos with Cinematic Flair

Since Kristina and Kyle wanted a mix of cinematic and candid moments, I incorporated both natural light and off-camera flash to create a variety of moods. I guided them through the garden’s most scenic spots—wooden bridges, winding paths, and the striking architecture.

One of my favorite moments was when Kyle made Kristina laugh so hard she nearly doubled over, a perfect reflection of their playful bond. These real, unfiltered emotions are what make cherry blossom engagement photos so special—they’re not just beautiful, they tell a story.

A Celebration of Love and Adventure

Kristina and Kyle’s engagement session wasn’t just about capturing beautiful portraits—it was about celebrating their journey. From childhood friends to soulmates, their love story is full of twists, laughter, and serendipity. Having the chance to document this milestone, especially on the anniversary of their first date, made the session all the more meaningful. To Kristina and Kyle: Thank you for letting me be part of your adventure!
