A Brief History of Kona Kai Resort
Shelter Island did not exist until 1934, when the city began dredging the bay floor to build a protective sandbar for local watercraft. By 1952, under the direction of Port Director John Bates, a formal development plan took shape, and the city mandated a South Pacific theme for all structures built on the new peninsula.
In 1953, industrialist C. Arnholt Smith established the members-only Kona Kai Club as one of the island's first developments, originally seeking a secure berth for his personal yacht. He hired an architect from Hawaii to design the property in a distinct Polynesian style, and the club quickly became one of Southern California's most exclusive social destinations. Presidents Kennedy and Nixon were among its patrons, and Hollywood regulars including Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, and Dick Van Dyke moored their vessels at the private marina. The resort passed through several ownership groups over the following decades before Noble House Hotels and Resorts acquired the property in 2013 and completed a multi-million-dollar renovation. Today, the 170-room resort preserves its Spanish Colonial and Polynesian heritage while operating as a full-service luxury resort open to the public.

Ceremony Site Fees start at $1,600 in the off-peak season (November through March) and $3,600 during peak season (April through October). Specific spaces carry flat-rate fees: the Private Beach is $2,500, the Cabo Courtyard and Marina View Lawn are each $2,000, and the Point Loma Circle Patio is $1,500. All ceremony fees include a one-hour rehearsal, chairs, signage, gift tables, a sound system, and a water station.
Food and Beverage Minimums range from $2,500 in the off-season up to $30,000 during peak periods, depending on venue, guest count, and day of the week. All F&B is subject to a mandatory 25% service charge and 7.75% California state tax.
