A Fairytale October Wedding at Mt. Woodson Castle
Dakota and Nathan met in their college engineering classes, and years later, they’re both working civil engineers who spent their wedding-planning season elbow-deep in a home renovation project together. That’s the kind of team they are: practical, hands-on, and always building something beautiful. So when it came time to choose their castle wedding venue, it made perfect sense that they’d pick a place with real character and history behind it.
I met Dakota and Nathan at the Bridal Bazaar wedding expo, and we hit it off right away. They loved my photos, but what really clicked was how I approach telling the story of a wedding day. Their October wedding took place at Mt. Woodson Castle in Ramona, and my team of four provided full photo and video coverage, from getting ready that morning through their joyful send-off that night. Working with them was an absolute pleasure. They trusted my guidance on the timeline, and their appreciation throughout the process meant the world to me.

Why They Chose This Castle Wedding Venue
Dakota and Nathan wanted a setting that felt romantic without feeling stiff. As they put it, “The castle just had such a fun and romantic vibe, with so many options for photo backdrops!” When I asked about their favorite feature, they didn’t hesitate: “The outdoor reception space and the nice ceremony backdrop.” I couldn’t agree more. Mt. Woodson Castle is one of the most photogenic venues I get to shoot. Its old-world stonework, sweeping lake views, and iconic windmill give every photo a storybook quality. It’s also a Personal Touch Dining venue, so the food is always excellent.
First Look, Furry Friends, and an Outdoor Ceremony
The couple’s own dogs, who’d already made an appearance at their engagement session, joined the celebration too. A sweet First Look kicked off the morning before an outdoor ceremony on the castle lawn, officiated by the bride’s uncle with a Celtic hand-fasting ceremony woven in. Dakota kept things simple and classy for the decor. “We like simple and classy, coupled with the venue,” she told me, “so we thought it would go well together.” Her florals followed suit: white and green, “classy but whimsy too.”

Cha Cha Slides and Signature Cocktails
The reception carried that same easy elegance outdoors, with string lights, a checkerboard dance floor, and a sweetheart table dressed in soft sage tones. A live artist sketched guest portraits during cocktail hour, and signature drinks (an Old Fashioned and a Gin & Tonic) kept the celebration flowing. Dakota swapped into a second dress for dancing, ready to move once the DJ took over. And move, they did. “He controls the vibes,” the couple laughed, and he brought plenty of them, cha cha slide trick included.
We captured portraits on the castle’s front steps, its rear balcony, and the front lawn, balancing elegant portraiture with candid, joy-filled moments throughout. My team delivered a Same-Day Edit during dinner and a physical album highlighting their day before they even left.
Congratulations again to Dakota and Nathan. Thank you for trusting us with your castle wedding venue celebration. It was an honor to help tell your story.
