Cape Rey
Carlsbad Beach

Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, A Hilton Resort & Spa, is one of the few full-service resorts in North County San Diego that sits directly across the street from the sand. The ceremony lawn faces the Pacific. The cocktail terrace catches the sunset. Meanwhile, the ballroom is a short walk from both, so guests move from vows to dinner without shuttles or long hallways. Add 215 guest rooms, an on-site spa, and an oceanfront restaurant, and the entire wedding weekend can happen in one place. For couples who want a Southern California beach wedding without sand on the dance floor, Cape Rey deserves a close look.

Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach:
A Beachfront Wedding Venue in North County San Diego

Cape Rey first opened as the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa. Then, in April 2015, the property relaunched with a new name and a new personality built around Carlsbad beach life. Weddings were part of the plan from day one of the rebrand. In fact, the resort's announcement listed getting married at the Cape right alongside dining and meetings.

The design is modern California Craftsman: stone, warm wood, and a lot of glass pointed at the ocean. Not long after the relaunch, Here Comes The Guide named Cape Rey both Best Wedding Venue and Best Waterfront Venue in San Diego. Today, it remains one of the most requested coastal wedding venues in Carlsbad.

A Brief  History of Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Noteworthy Features of This Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort

Cape Rey works well for weddings because the pieces sit close together, and most of the essentials come included. A few standouts:

Steps from South Carlsbad State Beach

The resort sits across the street from South Carlsbad State Beach, roughly 150 feet from the water. As a result, a quick beach portrait session fits easily into cocktail hour. Guests also get the ocean air without anyone walking a ceremony aisle in sand.

Ocean Crest Spa and Chandler's Oceanfront

The on-site Ocean Crest Spa handles pre-wedding pampering. Meanwhile, Chandler's Oceanfront restaurant and the pool deck fire pits are well suited for rehearsal dinners and welcome receptions. Everything stays within walking distance of your room.

A Strong Fit for South Asian Weddings

Cape Rey has real experience with multi-day South Asian celebrations. The Baraat can travel along the Front Drive. Then, the Milni, Tilak, and Aarti take place at the gate to the Shearwater Lawn. For a smaller Mehndi, the Pelican Watch and its terrace offer a more intimate setting. Couples can use in-house catering or bring in an outside caterer for a per-guest fee.

Flexible, Welcoming Policies

The resort is LGBTQ+ friendly and offers an elopement package for up to 30 guests. It also allows outside florists without restriction, which gives couples real creative freedom. Plus, Hilton Honors members can earn double points on their wedding, which goes a long way toward a first-anniversary trip.

Room for the Whole Wedding Weekend

With 215 guest rooms and suites, Cape Rey can house much of your guest list on property. That makes welcome drinks, the rehearsal dinner, and a farewell brunch far simpler to plan. It also means fewer late-night rides back to scattered hotels.

Wedding Ceremony & Reception Spaces at This Southern California Venue

Cape Rey's main wedding spaces are grouped together on the ocean side of the property. Here is a breakdown of each site, including guest capacity.

Outdoor Ceremony & Cocktail Sites

Indoor Reception Venues

Shearwater Lawn

This is the reason most couples book Cape Rey. The private lawn is framed by palms and tropical landscaping, with the Pacific as the backdrop. The surface is artificial turf, which is a smart choice on the coast. It stays green year-round, and it is much kinder to heels than wet grass. Ceremony packages include a garden trellis in white or natural wood and classic white wooden garden chairs.

Ceremony capacity: 75 to 350 seated

Shearwater Terrace

The Terrace sits right next to the ballroom and overlooks the coastline. Most couples use it for a sunset cocktail hour after the ceremony. However, it also works well for an outdoor dinner. Market lighting, outdoor lounge furniture, and a fire pit come standard with reception packages.

Reception capacity: 80 to 150 seated

Pelican Watch & Pelican Watch Terrace

This indoor-outdoor pairing is built for smaller gatherings. It hosts the reception portion of the elopement package, and it is a popular choice for Mehndi functions and rehearsal dinners. The terrace adds open air and ocean views to an otherwise intimate room.

Reception capacity: about 60 seated

Shearwater Ballroom

The Shearwater Ballroom is the resort's main indoor reception space at roughly 6,000 square feet. It has high ceilings, modern chandeliers, and a warm neutral palette. In other words, it is a clean slate for whatever florals and lighting you bring in. Air walls can divide the room into five smaller sections, so mid-sized weddings never feel lost in the space.

Reception capacity: up to 350 seated with dinner and dancing (80-guest minimum)

Chandler's Oceanfront

The on-site restaurant is available for private events. It works best for rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, and farewell brunches rather than the main reception.

Private event capacity: about 230 seated (confirm with the venue)

Pricing for a Wedding at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Cape Rey's pricing combines a venue fee with per-guest food and beverage packages. Here is a practical breakdown to help with early budget planning.

Venue Fees

The combined ceremony and reception venue fee starts around $3,500 and varies by season. It covers a five-hour window from ceremony start to reception end. Additionally, the ceremony package includes the trellis, white garden chairs, gift and guest book tables, a fruit-infused water station, and a sound system with microphone.

Food & Beverage

All catering is handled in-house. Plated dinner packages run $120 to $175 per person. Buffet and station packages run $160 to $255 per person. Each reception package includes a one-hour hosted bar, passed hors d'oeuvres, a sparkling wine toast, cake cutting, and coffee and tea service. Better yet, the rentals are built in: dance floor, staging, silver Chiavari chairs, floor-length white linens, china, glassware, and a private dressing room.

Bar Packages & Service Charge

A full four-hour bar package adds $54 to $75 per person. Also, plan for a 26% service charge on top of food and beverage, plus tax.

What 100 Guests Might Look Like

For a rough benchmark, a 100-guest plated wedding with a four-hour bar lands somewhere around $25,000 to $35,000 before tax. That range includes the venue fee and the service charge. Upgrades, late-night bites, and peak-season dates will push it higher.

Elopement Package

For up to 30 guests, the elopement package is $1,000. It includes a 4.5-hour window, with the ceremony on the Shearwater Lawn and the reception in Pelican Watch. Tables, chairs, linens, bistro lighting, heaters, and a sound system are included. Note that food and beverage are priced separately.
Note: Pricing is sourced from publicly available venue listings at the time of publication. All figures are estimates and may vary based on guest count, date, and selected services. Contact the venue directly for current, personalized pricing.

South Asian Wedding Package

The South Asian rental fee runs $3,500 to $6,500. It covers five-hour or all-day use of the Shearwater Lawn, Terrace, and Ballroom, plus the Baraat on the Front Drive and day-of parking. Couples who prefer an outside caterer pay $50 to $70 per person, which includes water, lemonade, coffee and tea, and a champagne toast.

Wedding Photo Opportunities at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Cape Rey packs a lot of visual variety into a short walk. As a result, a wedding gallery here can move from wide ocean frames to quiet garden portraits without losing much time. A few standout locations:

The Shearwater Lawn & Arbor

With no tall buildings around it, the lawn opens up wide compositions of sky, ocean, and your full guest count. It is the natural home for ceremony coverage and family formals. Plus, the palms along the edges add depth to every frame.

The Terraces at Golden Hour

The Shearwater and Pelican Watch Terraces sit above street level. That elevation gives clean sightlines to the sunset over the water. Later in the evening, the market lights and fire pits add warm, layered light to couple portraits.

The Pool Deck & Gardens

Tall palms, tropical plantings, and stone walkways around the pool deck make a lush backdrop for wedding party photos. These spots also offer a little shade when the afternoon sun is strong.

The Indoor Foyers

Floor-to-ceiling windows and tile details in the pre-function foyers give a clean, protected option for portraits. This is especially useful during harsh midday light or a windy afternoon.

A Timing Tip for Cape Rey

Coastal light rewards good planning. For that reason, scheduling the ceremony about 90 to 120 minutes before sunset usually works best. Guests stay comfortable during vows. Then, golden hour arrives right on time for beach and terrace portraits, just before everyone heads inside for dinner.

South Carlsbad State Beach & the Bluffs

Just across the street, the beach and its bluffs are the setting for classic sand-and-surf portraits. Sunset silhouettes and wide bluff-top landscapes work especially well here. Because it is so close, a beach session fits neatly into cocktail hour.

What Couples Say About Getting Married at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach

Across review platforms, Cape Rey earns consistently high marks, including a perfect 5.0 rating on WeddingWire. The event and catering team comes up again and again, with couples crediting their coordinators for being organized, responsive, and calm on the day itself. The food also gets real praise, which is not always the case at resort weddings. Many reviewers point out that the short distance between the lawn, the terrace, and the beach let them spend more time with their guests. In addition, couples often mention strong value compared with other oceanfront resorts in San Diego County. Occasional notes mention microphone trouble during windy outdoor ceremonies or brief communication gaps during staff changes. Still, the overall tone is overwhelmingly positive.
