Drinks, Then Destiny
Calee and Derric’s engagement photos at the beach felt like a continuation of a story that began with a little initiative. They met at Tavern in Pacific Beach, where Calee worked and Derric was a regular. She thought he was cute and decided to make the first move, sending him drinks until he finally got the hint. It worked. Their next chapter unfolded in Sayulita, Mexico, during a birthday trip for Derric’s dad. While getting ready for dinner, his stepmom suggested photos, and moments later, Derric was down on one knee in a place that already meant something to them. They share a love for cocktails, URBN Pizza, travel, and beach days, even if their snack and movie loyalties differ. She’s Harry Potter and Reese’s, he’s Fast & Furious and Hot Cheetos. They found me on Instagram, and the ease between us was immediate.

Rocks, Salt Air & October Light at Windansea Beach
Windansea Beach in La Jolla made perfect sense for their engagement photos. They love the beach, and the rocky shoreline here carries a character that feels distinct from other San Diego coastlines. As a Southern California wedding photographer, access to places like this is something I never take for granted. The rocks introduce texture and quiet drama while the shoreline keeps everything relaxed.
We started with movement: walking, pausing, laughing when waves crept too close. I spent time learning what felt natural to them, adjusting prompts so nothing felt forced. That space allowed their personalities to surface in small ways, which is where meaningful images tend to live.

Sunset Engagement Photos at the Beach
Creating engagement photos at the beach often means working with changing light. For Calee and Derric, I blended natural sunset tones with off-camera flash as evening approached. This allowed for both candid warmth and cinematic depth without interrupting the flow. Prompts kept them relaxed and present, which is where the strongest moments tend to happen.
Sessions like this also serve a bigger purpose. They build trust and comfort before the wedding day arrives. For couples planning a San Diego wedding, that familiarity can make portraits feel calm and efficient when timelines tighten. Calee and Derric left with more than photographs. Their engagement photos at the beach can now bring them back to a quiet October night, a place they love, and the anticipation of everything ahead.
