Angie & Johnny’s Vibrant Summer Resort Wedding at Kona Kai Resort
There’s nothing quite like a summer resort wedding in San Diego. Angie and Johnny’s celebration at Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island was nothing short of spectacular. True to their personalities, they infused their day with energy, joy, and meaningful traditions. From an emotional First Look to a jaw-dropping flashmob performance at their reception, every detail reflected their unique love story.
I had the honor of photographing their wedding months after capturing their engagement session at Chicano Park and the Coronado Ferry Landing. Their wedding day was filled with heartfelt moments, stunning scenery, and the perfect blend of culture and personal flair. My team and I documented everything—from Angie’s getting ready to the lively reception—preserving every unforgettable moment.

A Stunning Resort Wedding with Oceanfront Views
Kona Kai Resort provided a breathtaking backdrop for Angie and Johnny’s wedding. Their First Look took place in a charming breezeway lined with lush greenery. This emotional moment that set the tone for the day. Afterward, we captured stunning couple’s portraits by the Point Loma Circle Patio, followed by portraits with their wedding party and immediate family on the Marina View Lawn.
Their ceremony was held on the scenic Skyline Park lawn, overlooking the sparkling waters of San Diego Bay. Guests enjoyed panoramic ocean views as Angie walked down the aisle, escorted by her father in his Navy dress whites and her mother in a traditional Japanese formal outfit. Johnny’s expression said it all—his eyes lit up, his smile widened, and he visibly fought back happy tears as Angie approached.
Later, the celebration moved to the grand Point Loma Ballroom, where elegant chandeliers cast a warm glow over the room. Floral centerpieces adorned each table, and soft draping added a touch of romance to the space. Between heartfelt toasts and an incredible dinner, guests reveled in the couple’s joyous energy. Just when everyone thought the night couldn’t get any more exciting, Angie and her closest friends surprised the crowd with a flashmob dance, igniting cheers throughout the ballroom.

A Perfect Blend of Tradition and Personal Touches
Angie and Johnny thoughtfully incorporated both of their cultures into their wedding day. Angie wore delicate Japanese flower clips in her hair, complementing her elegant updo and honoring her mother’s heritage. She also decorated her wedding dress hanger with similar floral details, tying everything together beautifully. Among the wedding items I photographed at the start of the day, she included a Japanese fan and a tiny Mexican sombrero, beautifully representing both cultures.
Bridesmaids wore soft shades of green, perfectly complementing the groomsmen’s grey suits and matching ties. To honor family traditions, their guest favors—Mexican pouches and Japanese fans—symbolized prosperity, good fortune, and warmth from both cultures. Every detail seamlessly wove together family, tradition, and love, making their wedding a truly unforgettable experience.

Capturing Their Love Story

Every moment reflected their love, energy, and deep connection. Congratulations, Angie and Johnny! Wishing you a lifetime of love, laughter, and dance-filled adventures.
