Of course, as a San Diego wedding photographer, I’m often asked if there’s a need for two wedding photographers. The truth is, there is no clear-cut right or wrong answer. It all depends on your wedding day vision, schedule, and price point. Our most popular wedding collections include two photographers, and we encourage having two photographers for the depth they add to your gallery. There are weddings where even a third photographer is beneficial.
The size of your wedding, timeline, photo priorities, and price point can all determine whether a second shooter is necessary.
- Wedding Guest Count: If your wedding has 100+ guests, we recommend a Second Photographer. You’ll want photos of everyone in attendance. The higher the guest count, the more coverage you should have. For large weddings with 300+ guests, we recommend adding a third photographer to capture more moments of your loved ones.
- Getting Ready: If you and your partner are getting ready at separate locations, it’s almost impossible to capture Getting Ready photos of both of you without a Second Photographer. Consider how important Getting Ready photos are to you.
- Cocktail Hour: If you want your cocktail hour covered, we recommend having a 2nd or even 3rd photographer. One photographer can work with the couple during portraits, another can be dedicated to cocktail hour, and a third can be focused on reception details. Yes, there will be photos of your guests from the reception dance floor. But to make sure you get photos of all of your guests (including those who don’t dance or who go home early), a Second Photographer to capture Cocktail Hour photos of your guests is a must!

They can capture details while the Lead Photographer photographs the couple or family, expedite wedding party portraits, and make the most of limited time with the couple by providing more variety of compositions and angles in a shorter time.
