Devon & Josh’s Thoughtful Wedding Weekender in San Diego

Some weddings unfold in a single day. Others choose intentional space to breathe. Devon and Josh opted for lots of space, creating a beautiful two-day wedding weekender that felt intentional from beginning to end.

They met when they were just 18, as they were entering college. Life took them on a few adventures, including Devon’s time playing soccer in Argentina. That chapter came full circle when Josh proposed to her there. Today, they still share that same active energy, whether it’s snowboarding together or planning their next adventure. I first connected with them through one of my past couples, who were guests at this wedding. That kind of referral always means a lot. It says everything about trust.

Their celebration spanned two days, with the ceremony taking place at Sweetwater Regional Park overlooking the lake. The ballroom reception followed the next day at VASA in North Park. I had the honor of documenting both days. From ceremony moments and nature portraits to ballroom portraits, first dances, and a sparkler exit, it was all covered with care. They were incredibly easy to work with and fully trusted the process. That made everything flow.

A Nature-Focused Ceremony at Sweetwater Regional Park

The ceremony was designed to feel intimate and grounded. Set on a wooden deck overlooking the lake, the view did most of the work. The decor stayed restrained and intentional. A dark wood arch framed the moment, softened with ivory fabric and white florals. The palette mirrored the landscape. Soft neutrals, muted greens, and natural textures kept everything cohesive.

We stepped away for portraits along the nearby trails and by the water. The setting gave us space to create images that felt calm and connected. Devon’s gown featured clean lines, a satin finish, and a cathedral veil that moved beautifully in the wind. Josh’s light tan suit complemented the environment without pulling focus. Everything felt aligned with the setting, with nothing feeling forced.

A Wedding Weekender Transition Into an Elevated Reception

The second day of this wedding weekender shifted the tone in the best way. Cocktail hour began outdoors in the garden before guests moved into the ballroom. The transformation inside was immediate. Overhead florals, chandeliers, and string lights created a layered ceiling design that pulled you into the space. The reception decor leaned into contrast. Black linens grounded the tables, while gold accents and white florals kept things refined. Candlelight added warmth, while the LED dancefloor introduced a modern edge.

Devon’s reception look elevated her ceremony style. She kept the satin skirt but added a fully embellished corset bodice. Her Louboutin heels were a subtle but meaningful detail. Josh matched that energy with a classic black tuxedo and his own red-soled shoes, tying their looks together in a way that felt personal. The red bottoms were a wedding gift from Devon’s parents, which they wore with gratitude and pride. We created portraits throughout the ballroom before the night picked up. The space, the lighting, and their energy all worked together naturally.

A Weekend Wedding Designed With Intention

What stood out most about this wedding weekender was how well everything flowed. Day one felt calm and connected to nature. Day two felt elevated and immersive. Neither competed with the other. They built on each other. From a planning perspective, this approach gave their celebration room to breathe. It allowed them to stay present while still capturing everything that mattered. My role was to guide that flow and make sure nothing felt rushed. I feel like that balance shows up in the images.
