A Heartfelt Summer Maternity Photoshoot at the Cliffs of Del Mar
Some sessions feel extra special, and this one with Shei and Sam absolutely did. I’ve had the joy of photographing their love story from the beginning. In the spring of 2023, we kicked things off with their engagement session at the Japanese Friendship Garden, a peaceful and lush space filled with koi ponds, winding paths, and serene cherry blossoms. Later that year, I captured their unforgettable November wedding at Grand Tradition Estate & Gardens. So when they reached out about a summer maternity photoshoot, I was honored to document this next beautiful chapter in their lives.
We met at Sunset Seat in Del Mar, a quiet gem with sweeping ocean views and wildflower-lined cliffs. The timing was perfect. June brought golden sunlight, and with it came the prettiest pop of purple blooms that danced in the breeze. Shei had seen photos of this exact spot online and was drawn to the way the wildflowers framed the ocean view. The peaceful cliffs and vibrant colors felt like the perfect backdrop to celebrate this season of joy.
Why I Love a Summer Maternity Photoshoot at Sunset Seat
This spot is a local favorite for a reason. I photographed some of my earliest elopements here, and I’ve done sessions just down the hill along the bluffs. It’s also minutes away from the Torrey Pines Nature Reserve, another go-to for San Diego engagement sessions, known for its dramatic cliffs, winding trails, and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. The cliffside textures, warm light, and stunning vistas make it a magical setting, especially for a summer maternity photoshoot like this one.
I worked with Shei and Sam to plan outfits that felt elevated and timeless. Shei wore a flowing ivory dress that caught the breeze beautifully, while Sam opted for a nice sweater and relaxed slacks that complemented the coastal vibe. We kept the session light and easygoing, with natural prompts to help them stay present and playful. I used a mix of natural light and off-camera flash to give them a gallery full of cinematic portraits and candid, joy-filled moments. Their connection made every image feel honest and full of love.

Photographing Shei and Sam again was more than just another session. It felt like a continuation of their legacy.
